AV-arkin ja Cinema Orionin Taidetta taiteen vuoksi -sarja jatkuu näytöksellä ”Vetäytyneet” tiistaina 21.5.2024 klo 17. Näytös päättää syksyllä 2023 alkaneen ja keväällä 2024 jatkuneen teeman ”Jälleenrakennustyömaa”. Kevätkauden päätös koostuu kahdesta elokuvasta, jotka ovat saaneet maailman ensi-iltansa maineikkaan Rotterdamin elokuvajuhlien lyhytelokuvakilpailussa peräkkäisinä vuosina. Nyt ne nähdään ensi kertaa Suomessa. Näytöksen teoksissa vetäytyminen on sekä hiljaista omistautumista että uhmakas irtiotto.
Albaniassa syntyneen, Ateenassa asuvan Neritan Zinxhirian lyhytelokuva Light of Light (2023) antaa uuden elämän pyhän Athos-vuoren luostariyhdyskunnasta löytyneille 1930-luvun lasinegatiiveille. Pitkän ja monipuolisen uran niin käsitetaiteen kuin kuunnelmaelokuvan parissa tehneen Mox Mäkelän tuorein teos, keskipitkä Petticoat Fire (2024) tuo kontrastia munkkien mietteliäälle hiljaisuudelle: elokuva on vimmainen monologi, joka sanoutuu irti kerskakuluttajien yhteiskunnasta ja suree muiden lajien ja jaetun ympäristömme tuhoa. Tuttuun tapaan Mäkelän kuvissa on lukuisia kerroksia ja yllätyksiä, mutta tällä kertaa Mäkelä hyödyntää myös jälkikuvaa: verkkokalvoille voi jäädä kummittelemaan se, mitä ei enää näy. Elokuvia seuraa Mox Mäkelän ja tutkija, taiteilija, kuraattori Kari Yli-Annalan keskustelu.
Taidetta taiteen vuoksi tuo yhteen taiteilijain liikkuvaa kuvaa, mediataidetta ja kokeellista elokuvaa niin Suomesta kuin ympäri maailmaa, uutuuksia ja klassikoita. Näytössarjaa ovat tukeneet Koneen säätiö, Opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriö sekä Helsingin kaupunki. Sarjan kuratoinnista vastaa työryhmä, johon kuuluvat Diego Ginartes, Sepideh Rahaa, Tytti Rantanen ja Azar Saiyar. Syksyn 2024 teema on ”Kosketa minua”. Ennen kuolemaansa vuonna 1932 eräs munkki rakensi itselleen kameran yhdessä maailman eristäytyneimmistä paikoista. Lähes vuosisata myöhemmin elokuvan ohjaaja löysi ja rekonstruoi 3000 säilynyttä lasinegatiivia. Hän sulautti nämä kuvat omiin eläväisiin super 8 -otoksiinsa ja loi näistä elokuvallisen pyhiinvaelluksen, jossa mennyt limittyy saumattomasti yhteen nykyisyyden kanssa. Tuloksena on lumoava visuaalinen kertomus, joka uhmaa ajan itsensä rajoituksia.

Art for Art’s Sake: The Withdrawn
AV-arkki’s and Cinema Orion’s Art for Art’s Sake screening programme will continue with the screening ”The Withdrawn” on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 17:00. The screening concludes the theme ”Reconstruction Site”, which began in autumn 2023 and continued in spring 2024. The spring season finale consists of two films that have had their world premiere in the prestigious Rotterdam Film Festival Ammodo Tiger Short Competition for consecutive years. Now they will be seen for the first time in Finland. In these two films, withdrawal is both silent devotion and defiant detachment.
Albanian-born, Athens-based Neritan Zinxhiria’s short film Light of Light (2023) breathes new life into the photographic plates from the early 1930s found in the monastic community of Mount Athos. Mox Mäkelä has a long and versatile career ranging from conceptual art to audio play films. Her latest film, mid-length Petticoat Fire (2024), contrasts with the pensive silence of Zinxhiria’s monks: the film is an ardent monologue where the protagonist distances themself from the hyper-consumerist society and mourns the destruction of other species and our shared environment. As usual, Mäkelä’s images have numerous layers and surprises, but this time Mäkelä also utilises the afterimage: what is no longer visible can remain haunted on the retinas. The films are followed by a discussion with Mox Mäkelä and researcher, artist, curator Kari Yli-Annala.
Art for Art’s Sake brings together artists’ moving image, media art and experimental film from Finland and around the world, both classics and new works. The screening programme is supported by the Kone Foundation, the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the City of Helsinki. The curatorial team includes Diego Ginartes, Sepideh Rahaa, Tytti Rantanen, and Azar Saiyar. The theme for the fall season 2024 will be “Touch Me”.
