In 1990s Finland, people watched The Bold and the Beautiful and the news side by side on television. One offered an escape from reality, while the other presented a bleak picture of the recession gripping society. When the clock struck five on a weekday afternoon, more than a million Finns would gather around their screens to follow the relationship dramas of an American fashion dynasty. At the same time as people queued for bread and took to the streets to protest, unprecedented crowds turned out to see the American stars brought to Finland – the legendary Ridge and Eric.
In Soap Fever (Soap Fever), director Inka Achté dives into this captivating fan phenomenon. As she gets to know the show’s devoted fans, she is forced to confront her own painful memories of the recession years, but also discovers what may be the Finns’ greatest superpower.
