At this centenary screening of\u00a0Moana, a Romance of the Golden Age<\/em>, the film will be accompanied live by Henri Lindstr\u00f6m, Nyla van Ingen<\/strong> & Sami van Ingen<\/strong>. They combine the film\u2019s original score, composed in 1926, with analogue field recordings made in Samoa in 1971 by Monica Flaherty<\/strong>, the daughter of Robert<\/strong> and Frances Flaherty<\/strong>.

In 1923, Robert Flaherty travelled with his wife Frances to the island of Savai\u2018i in Samoa. Their aim was to create a film that would capture and recreate Samoan traditions and everyday life \u2013 much as the Flahertys\u2019 previous film,\u00a0Nanook of the North<\/em>, had done.

The result was a groundbreaking work of documentary fiction. Like\u00a0Nanook<\/em>,\u00a0Moana<\/em>\u00a0blurred the boundaries between reality and fiction. Contemporary audiences took the film\u2019s portrayal as fact, but the debate over\u00a0Moana<\/em>\u2019s authenticity became an integral part of documentary film history. The English word \u201cdocumentary\u201d was originally coined in a review of\u00a0Moana<\/em>. Scottish filmmaker and critic John Grierson<\/strong> introduced the term in his review of the film, published under a pseudonym in February 1926, describing it as having \u201cdocumentary value.\u201d

A restoration of\u00a0Moana<\/em>, completed in 2014, premiered at the New York Film Festival. The restoration was carried out by Bruce Posner<\/strong> and Sami van Ingen. At Orion, the film will be screened from a brand-new 35 mm print produced with the support of the Centre Pompidou.

The live cinema-concert accompaniment combines a piano interpretation of the original score composed for the film in 1926 with analogue field recordings made by Monica Flaherty in Samoa in 1975. The field recordings will be played from the original recordings using reel-to-reel and compact cassette tape machines.

The accompaniment is performed by Henri Lindstr\u00f6m, a musician working as a solo artist in experimental electronic music; Canadian-born opera singer and sound artist Nyla van Ingen; and filmmaker and media artist Sami van Ingen.

The cinema concert will take place on Sunday, 22 November at 16:00. Like\u00a0Nanook,\u00a0Moana\u00a0blurred the boundaries between reality and fiction. Contemporary audiences took the film\u2019s portrayal as fact, but the debate over\u00a0Moana\u2019s authenticity became an integral part of documentary film history. The English word \u201cdocumentary\u201d was originally coined in a review of\u00a0Moana. Scottish filmmaker and critic John Grierson introduced the term in his review of the film, published under a pseudonym in February 1926, describing it as having \u201cdocumentary value.\u201dA restoration of\u00a0Moana, completed in 2014, premiered at the New York Film Festival. The restoration was carried out by Bruce Posner and Sami van Ingen. At Orion, the film will be screened from a brand-new 35 mm print produced with the support of the Centre Pompidou.The live cinema-concert accompaniment combines a piano interpretation of the original score composed for the film in 1926 with analogue field recordings made by Monica Flaherty in Samoa in 1975. The field recordings will be played from the original recordings using reel-to-reel and compact cassette tape machines.The accompaniment is performed by Henri Lindstr\u00f6m, a musician working as a solo artist in experimental electronic music; Canadian-born opera singer and sound artist Nyla van Ingen; and filmmaker and media artist Sami van Ingen.The cinema concert will take place on Sunday, 22 November at 16:00. As part of\u00a0the Flaherty Weekend, Sami van Ingen\u2019s\u00a0Cast of Shadows\u00a0will be screened\u00a0on Saturday, November 21.
