Taidetta taiteen vuoksi tuo yhteen taiteilijain liikkuvaa kuvaa, mediataidetta ja kokeellista elokuvaa niin Suomesta kuin ymp\u00e4ri maailmaa, uutuuksia ja klassikoita. Teos on toinen osa filmimaalausten sarjassa, jonka ensimm\u00e4inen osa, Pori\u2013Helsinki, on sata metri\u00e4 pitk\u00e4 maalaus kirkkaalle 35 mm:n filmille. Salt of My Eyes on poeettinen videoessee yrityksest\u00e4 saada yhteys ”salaper\u00e4iseen toiseen”, jonka kulttuuri ja el\u00e4m\u00e4 on viel\u00e4 ihmisen ulottumattomissa, mutta jota ihmisen toiminta jatkuvasti h\u00e4iritsee ja tuhoaa. Elokuvassa taiteilija seuraa kulttuurisesti moniulotteista ihmisen ja valaan suhdetta, el\u00e4m\u00e4n synty\u00e4 ja loppua maan p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4, sek\u00e4 myyttej\u00e4 ja unia suureksi valtamerien kulkijaksi muuntumisesta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taiteilija hautasi 35mm v\u00e4rifilminegatiivin kuolleiden lehtien alle Fukushima I -ydinvoimalan l\u00e4hell\u00e4. Lopputuloksena n\u00e4emme vimmaisesti v\u00e4lkkyv\u00e4\u00e4 valoa ja naarmuja, jotka visualisoivat n\u00e4kym\u00e4t\u00f6nt\u00e4 radioaktiivisuutta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yli sadan vuoden ajan, kun It\u00e4-Intian kauppakompaniaan kuuluvat laivat kuljettivat salpietaritynnyreit\u00e4 Englannin rannoille, ne kuljettivat mukanaan my\u00f6s mahtia, joka yh\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4rittelee, miten olemme maailmassa. Salpietari, joka tunnetaan my\u00f6s kemialliselta nimelt\u00e4\u00e4n kaliumnitraatti (KNO3), oli haluttua globaalia kauppatavaraa, jota louhittiin, kaupattiin ja josta taisteltiin, sill\u00e4 sit\u00e4 tarvittiin tuottamaan ruutia kilpaileville siirtomaavalloille. Tehdess\u00e4\u00e4n taustatutkimusta pidemp\u00e4\u00e4n elokuvaprojektiinsa After London Ben Rivers perehtyi myrkyllisiin maisemiin ja l\u00f6ysi kerrostulivuori Ijenin It\u00e4-Jaavassa. H\u00e4n laskeutui tulivuoren kraateriin ja kuvasi rikkikaivosta, jossa pieni joukko kaivosty\u00f6l\u00e4isi\u00e4 ker\u00e4\u00e4 rikki\u00e4 eri k\u00e4ytt\u00f6tarkoituksiin hyvin hankalissa olosuhteissa. N\u00e4ist\u00e4 testikuvista syntyi elokuva, johon Rivers yhdisti Herbert Readin runon \u201cThe Autumn of the World\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AV-arkki\u2019s and Cinema Orion\u2019s screening programme Art for Art\u2019s Sake continues with a screening \u201cSea and Soil\u201d on Tuesday, February 27 at 17:00 in Cinema Orion. Ranging from poetic to political, the films of the screening dig into the secrets of the soil and dive into the mighty, mythical sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different approaches also bring out the material possibilities of the film: Miia Rinne<\/strong> has painted her film Sea<\/em> (2013) by hand over the negative of her previous film. Shubhangi Singh <\/strong>has developed the film material for Birth of Grenade<\/em> (2023) with the imported colonial products: banana, dates, coconut powder. For sound of a million insects, light of a thousand stars<\/em> (2014), Japanese artist Tomonari Nishikawa<\/strong> buried film under a pile of leaves near the Fukushima I nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kati Roover<\/strong>\u2019s essay video Salt of My Eyes<\/em> (2020) seeks connection with whale, whose culture and life are under threat by humans. From posthuman to posthumous, a Tunisian artist Youn\u00e8s Ben Slimane<\/strong> paints a beautiful portrait in chiaroscuro of a gravedigger in We knew how beautiful they were, these islands<\/em> (2021). The screening ends with apocalyptic vapors and poetry, as Ben Rivers<\/strong> descends into the sulphuric depths of a volcano in Ijen\/London <\/em>(2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The films are followed by a panel discussion on the possibilities and limitations of art as a reconstruction site. The discussion will be held in Finnish, featuring essayist and documentarist Riikka Kaihovaara<\/strong>, PhD, Docent Karoliina Lummaa<\/strong> (BIOS), and artist Kati Roover<\/strong>. The artists Miia Rinne<\/strong> and Shubhangi Singh<\/strong> are also present in the screening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art for Art\u2019s Sake brings together artists\u2019 moving image, media art and experimental film from Finland and around the world, both classics and new works. The screening programme is supported by the Kone Foundation, the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the City of Helsinki. The curatorial team includes Diego Ginartes<\/strong>, Sepideh Rahaa<\/strong>, Tytti Rantanen<\/strong>, and Azar Saiyar<\/strong>. Sea is the second part of a series of film paintings, where new works are painted upon earlier ones, reusing the same celluloid as the substrate. Embodied by the same corporeal material, these paintings build upon each other like different episodes in the life of a human being. In this way, a series of superimposed films has a resemblance to the development of the human psychic system. Events of the bygone episodes remain effective in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kati Roover: <\/strong>Salt of My Eyes<\/em> (FI 2020, 14:03, English) S<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salt of My Eyes is a poetic essay film about the attempt to connect with \u201dthe mysterious other\u201d whose culture and life are still out of reach but who are constantly disturbed and <\/p>\n\n\n\n

destroyed by human actions. In the film, the artist observes the culturally complex human and whale relationship, the origin and the end of life on earth and myths and dreams of becoming wanderer of the big oceans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

35mm colour negative film was buried under fallen leaves near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Visualising invisible radioactivity, the result is a frenzy of flickers of light and scratches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shubhangi Singh: <\/strong>Birth of a Grenade<\/em> (FI, EE, 2023, 7:28, English) S<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For over a hundred years, when the ships belonging to the East India Company brought barrels of saltpetre to the shores of England, they also brought with them a force that determines how we exist in the world today. Saltpetre, also known by its chemical name, Potassium Nitrate (KNO3) was a coveted global commodity that was mined, traded and fought over for its role in the production of gunpowder by competing colonial powers. The film has been hand processed solely in bananas, dates and cocoa powder\u2014 that is, materials that would otherwise not be available for use in Helsinki had they not once been carried in the bellies of ships across the heaving seas and into Europe. The hazy, somewhat ghostly images of the film are made possible from the flesh of the fruits thus inherently carrying within them traces of their history and the violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At night, a stranger digs graves, buries the dead and watches over them. In the dark, he reveals the personal belongings of the deceased to us. These objects, separated from their owners, bear their scars and their experiences, while others melt until they become enigmatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ben Rivers: <\/strong>Ijen\/London<\/em> (UK, 2022, 06:42, englanti) S<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While doing research for his longer film project After London, Ben Rivers researched toxic landscapes and found Ijen volcano, East Java. He went down into the crater and filmed the sulphur mine, where a few people work in very difficult conditions to collect sulphur for various uses. The film has been hand processed solely in bananas, dates and cocoa powder\u2014 that is, materials that would otherwise not be available for use in Helsinki had they not once been carried in the bellies of ships across the heaving seas and into Europe. For sound of a million insects, light of a thousand stars (2014), Japanese artist Tomonari Nishikawa buried film under a pile of leaves near the Fukushima I nuclear power plant.Kati Roover\u2019s essay video Salt of My Eyes (2020) seeks connection with whale, whose culture and life are under threat by humans. From posthuman to posthumous, a Tunisian artist Youn\u00e8s Ben Slimane paints a beautiful portrait in chiaroscuro of a gravedigger in We knew how beautiful they were, these islands (2021). The screening ends with apocalyptic vapors and poetry, as Ben Rivers descends into the sulphuric depths of a volcano in Ijen\/London (2022).The films are followed by a panel discussion on the possibilities and limitations of art as a reconstruction site. The discussion will be held in Finnish, featuring essayist and documentarist Riikka Kaihovaara, PhD, Docent Karoliina Lummaa (BIOS), and artist Kati Roover. The artists Miia Rinne and Shubhangi Singh are also present in the screening. Art for Art\u2019s Sake brings together artists\u2019 moving image, media art and experimental film from Finland and around the world, both classics and new works. The screening programme is supported by the Kone Foundation, the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the City of Helsinki. Visualising invisible radioactivity, the result is a frenzy of flickers of light and scratches. Shubhangi Singh: Birth of a Grenade (FI, EE, 2023, 7:28, English) SFor over a hundred years, when the ships belonging to the East India Company brought barrels of saltpetre to the shores of England, they also brought with them a force that determines how we exist in the world today. Saltpetre, also known by its chemical name, Potassium Nitrate (KNO3) was a coveted global commodity that was mined, traded and fought over for its role in the production of gunpowder by competing colonial powers. The film has been hand processed solely in bananas, dates and cocoa powder\u2014 that is, materials that would otherwise not be available for use in Helsinki had they not once been carried in the bellies of ships across the heaving seas and into Europe. The hazy, somewhat ghostly images of the film are made possible from the flesh of the fruits thus inherently carrying within them traces of their history and the violence.\ufeffYoun\u00e8s Ben Slimane: We knew how beautiful they were, these islands (FR, TN, 2021, 20:30, ei dialogia) SAt night, a stranger digs graves, buries the dead and watches over them. He went down into the crater and filmed the sulphur mine, where a few people work in very difficult conditions to collect sulphur for various uses.
